EARTH DAY!
Every year on 22 April, Earth Day is celebrated around the world.
It is first created in 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. This date is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, which is often March 20, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John MaConnell in 1969.

Many cities extend the schedule of Earth Day observance events to be an entire week, usually starting on April 16, and ending on Earth Day, April 22. These events are designed to encourage environmentally aware behaviors, including increased recycling, improved energy-efficiency, and reduction in disposable items.

So please continue to do your part by participating in more environmentally friendly activities!

want to catch the herons in action yourself? why not head down to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserveduring the long weekends to see and experience for yourself?
you can just hop on to the Kranji Express (only available during weekends and public holidays) for jus $1!

Word of advise:
As we know, it is a RESERVE, so be expected to meet Mr. Mosquitoes along the way. Always bring along a bottle of water, insect repellant, cap/umbrella and wear pants or long sleeves shirts.

Another thing is that please keep as quiet as possible when walking around, you will definitely be able to see more. Also, DOT NOT pick anything home, leave your footprints only!

Types of herons

1. Grey Heron (Ardea cinera)
The Grey Heron is one of the largest birds in Singapore, standing at 1m tall with a wingspan of 2m. They eat whatever they can catch: fish, amphibians, arthropods, crustacean, and even small mammals, reptiles, small birds.

2. Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)
The Purple Heron is the most colourful large heron in Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, with a distinctive snake-like neck which is usually held in a prominent kink. Its colourful plumage actually provides excellent camouflage among the reeds. Purple Herons feed mainly on fish, but will also eat insects, amphibians, and occasionally shellfish, small mammals, reptiles and even small birds.

3. Striated Heron (formerly known as Little Heron) (Butorides striatus)
Little Herons are often encountered at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, hunched into a compact egg-shape on a branch over the water, motionless but intently looking out for prey. Clothed in their camouflaging plumage, the less observant visitor often overlooks them. Little Herons eat mainly small fish and crustacean. They also take amphibians and insects and any other edible tidbits, including small mammals.

4. Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

Black-crowned Night Herons are small stocky, short-legged compared to other herons. They are handsomely attired in a tri-colour plumage of black, grey and white, with two long plumes on the nape.Night Herons are unpopular with other herons, which attack the Night Herons on sight. This is because Night Herons are very aggressive and steal eggs and young of other heron colonies. Perhaps it is the harassment from other birds that force Night Herons to come out mainly at night.Besides fish, Black Crowned Night Herons eat a wide range of prey from aquatic invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles to land invertebrates including small mammals. They also eat plants and are not above eating carrion and rooting around garbage dumps.

HERONS
Species:
Herons are wading birds belonging to the Ardeidae Family.

Sizes:
Herons range from medium to large. Some herons like the Goliath Heron (Ardea goliath), stands tall at 1.4-1.5metres, while some herons are smaller in size, such as the Striated Heron. Grey Herons and Purple Herons usually stand at a height of about 1metres.

Nutrition:
They feed on insects, amphibians, crustaceans and other small aquatic animals.

Features:
Herons were named among the most intelligent birds, reflecting a wide variety, flexibility and adaptiveness to acquire food. Their long necks and powerful beaks help them to catch their prey easily. They have long, pointed bills, small heads, long snake-like necks and long legs and toes and fly with their necks retracted.

Habitat:
They live mostly in mangrove, swamp areas or other wetlands, with a water source nearby and usually nest colonially in trees. Herons are good indicators of the health of wetlands as they are sensitive to disturbance and changes in the environment. Herons are mainly threatened by water and noise pollutions, overuse of pesticides, human interference and habitat destructions.
